Safety – St Marys Harbour
St Marys Harbour Isles of Scilly

Safety

At St Mary’s Harbour, your safety is our top priority. We are committed to providing a secure and efficient environment for all harbour users, including vessels, passengers, and visitors. Our harbour staff are here to make your stay a safe and positive experience.

Our small, dedicated team follows stringent safety protocols, regular inspections, and maintenance routines to ensure the highest standards are met. We have clear navigational aids, designated safe zones for water sports, and well-marked visitor moorings to assist you during your stay. Additionally, our harbour staff are trained in emergency response and are always available to assist.

We work closely with local authorities and maritime organisations to continuously improve our safety measures, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Safety within St Mary’s Harbour

The speed limit within the Harbour is THREE KNOTS and applies to all vessels. For the safety of all our customers this limit is strictly enforced.

Please follow our safety advice

  • Make sure that your boat and crew are properly equipped for the activity that you are doing. Wear your lifejackets (they are useless unless you do!) and wear your kill cord, for your safety and others.
  • Be aware of navigational hazards: Ferries operate in the Harbour between the inhabited islands. The Scillonian arrives, tide and weather dependent at 12pm and departs at 1630pm.
  • Yacht racing takes part on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons during the sailing season. The course changes regularly but the start beach is just out of the harbour
  • Swimming is not permitted in the harbour for safety reasons. Although be aware on town beach before the mooring lines swimmers may be active.
